VOKALMUSIK

VOCAL MUSIC

The voice is the most difficult ‘musical instrument’. On the one hand, it is completely natural; after all, every person has it and can sing and speak. It is part of the body, and does not externalise its sound production to an external instrument. On the other hand, it is the most complicated instrument, because its versatility knows no bounds. When composing for voice, that means I have to answer the question of how to notate the music so that the singer will do exactly what I have in mind. The other fundamental issue is the relationship between text and music. What is in the foreground, what should I listen to? Does the music simply accentuate the text, or does the latter act as an affirmation of the music? How can a satisfactory alliance be achieved? It was because of these difficulties that I only began to compose for the voice late on, in my mid-thirties. This was preceded by months of research on the sonic possibilities of the voice, its notation and the history of modern vocal writing.

Mon cœur mis à nu for four voices (S-M-T-B) is a sequence of fifteen miniatures that goes through the different combinations from solo to quartet. Each miniature is a mini-madrigal with its own character, based on a text by Charles Baudelaire – from the Intimate Journals – that is not set, but its phonetic content formed the point of departure for the musical material and its semantics are transferred to the autonomous musical language. The division into fifteen (partly overlapping) sections permits a division of the extremely abundant vocal material. In this way I found a form – and a dramaturgy – with which I could create for that ‘super’-instrument, the voice, a ‘musical vocabulary’ whose conception was not based on the same concerns as instrumental music, but came about through this specific medium. An example: the soprano solo is a ‘setting’ of fourteen definitions of woman, which required me to find the corresponding musical figure for each of these characteristics.

While I radically kept the texts unintelligible in my settings of the 1990s, I did exactly the opposite in the works of the 2000s. In the choral work voiced void (24 solo voices, 6-6-6-6) I set a text by Moses Maimonides in the original Hebrew dealing with the figure of the Messiah in Jewish tradition. In sections 11 and 12 of the chapter ‘Hilchot Melachim’ in the Mishneh Torah, Maimonides presents an interpretation of the Messiah in which he is not a religious figure, but rather a political leader who heads a just government and is preparing the messianic age of humanity – a condition without war or hunger, without resentment or discord. While the division into two choral groups with two simultaneous texts mitigates their intelligibility, I set key words homophonically – for example, hammelech (‘the king’), hammashiach (‘the anointed’), Yisrael and so forth – as in a cadential phrase. Here the consonantal character of the language is specifically emphasised in order to do justice to the character of the Hebrew language and its script. The biblical quotations in the Maimonides text are spoken; lines from the Talmud on the Messiah (partly in Aramaic) are superimposed on these, somewhat in the manner of psalmody. In the intermezzo before the final section the sopranos – in a six-part retrograde canon – sing five sentences from the book Difficult Freedom: Essays on Judaism by Emmanuel Lévinas, in which the philosopher offers his own interpretation of the Messiah, which I share. voiced void is not a religious work but rather one motivated by faith in the sense of an unshakable basic conviction. Thus the texts have something of the strictness of a legal text for me; in a sense, this lends the music a certain Old Testament character. The Introitus whispers the words ‘The birth pangs of the Messiah’ (chevlo shel mashiach) and the Exodus the words ‘repair of the world’ (tiqqun ha’olam).

The subject of my vocal sextet (S-S-M-T-Bar-B) void – un delitto italiano. Un epitaffio is a portrait of Pier Paolo Pasolini, focusing on his gruesome murder in the night of 2 November 1975. I refer to the film and book Who Killed Pasolini? (originally Pasolini. Un delitto italiano) by Marco Tullio Giordana. Pasolini’s ‘execution’ is enclosed, as it were, in a setting of numerous passages from his poems. With these highly varied texts (ranging from spoken to sung) I not only set up a poetic, at times madrigalesque alternative world, but also a panorama of Pasolini’s thought. I divided the texts into six thematic groups: negative, death, hope / positive, Pasolini about himself, aesthetics / ethics and silence. These texts are spread over the form to create a narrative. One could read the work like a textbook, almost as a poetic libretto, with six complete poems and countless fragments. It consists of six sections with bel canto, sung / choked voice, onomatopoetic (scream, inhaled sounds, multiphonics), in a strained voice, with end products of the voice (swallowing, squeezing the neck, creaky voice) and a conclusion that gradually becomes more and more phonetic, interspersed with spoken or whispered texts. Musical (lontano ‘choirs’, homophonic ‘chorale’, trios, solos, madrigalisms etc.) and textual, as it were theatrical elements (though invisible) combine to form a small ‘opera’ scene. At the end, Pasolini’s name is hinted at by creaky female voices – a grave inscription, an epitaph. In a sense, this work is my ‘Hommage à Pier Paolo Pasolini’.

I wrote the solo Ese˙ apie vandenis (Lithuanian for ‘Essay on the Waters’) for the New York-based singer Jeffrey Gavett (baritone, also falsetto), after the poem by Anja Kampmann Versuch über das Meer (About the Sea). The text is heard in German (falsetto register) and English (normal baritone register); in addition, there are some fifty different translations of the word ‘water’ as well as onomatopoetic elements scattered through the work, such that it takes place on two primary and two secondary levels.

I have now written a substantial amount of vocal music. Angela Nova and Angela Nova 2 appeared on CD 3 (NEOS 11211-12); Finite Jest for flute and soprano will appear on CD 9 and Dov’è for five voices and orchestra on CD 10. My vocal music would not have come into being without the dedication of the singers and conductors. I am deeply grateful to them for their magnificent work.

MUSIQUE VOCALE
